Centre Urges Crackdown on Outdoor Ads for Betting and Gambling Platforms

Updated on by Mattias Fröbrant

In a recent development, the Indian government has taken a strong stance against the promotion of betting and gambling activities through outdoor advertisements.

The Union Information & Broadcasting Secretary, Apurva Chandra, has sent a letter to all state chief secretaries and Union Territory officials, urging them to take immediate action.

Last month, prior to the start of the Indian Premier League season, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) issued a fresh advisory to all media organizations, including print, television, and digital platforms, discouraging them from running ads for online betting and gambling platforms.

While there has been significant progress in curbing such advertisements in mainstream media, the government has now noticed a surge in outdoor promotions by betting and gambling platforms.

These platforms are utilizing hoardings, posters, banners, and even auto rickshaw branding to promote their websites and apps across India.

The recent letter sent by the Union Information & Broadcasting Secretary emphasizes the need for appropriate action to curb outdoor advertisements related to betting and gambling platforms.

State governments have been requested to crack down on space-selling agencies that facilitate the display of such ads on banners and hoardings.

It is worth noting that the ministry had previously issued advisories last year, clarifying that betting and gambling activities are illegal in India. Consequently, any direct or surrogate advertisements promoting these activities are deemed to be in violation of the rules.

The move to target outdoor advertisements for betting and gambling platforms reflects the government's commitment to prevent the spread of such activities and protect citizens from their potential negative consequences.

By extending the crackdown to include all forms of media, both traditional and outdoor, the government aims to create a comprehensive framework that discourages the promotion of these activities across the country.

It remains to be seen how the state governments will respond to this call for action and what measures they will implement to curb outdoor advertisements for betting and gambling platforms.

The government's initiative serves as a reminder that strict regulations are in place to safeguard the public from illegal and harmful activities, and it underscores the importance of responsible advertising practices in India.
