Slot machines have existed for decades and have always been a high point for casino visitors. They have appealed to the masses with their iconic reels, vibrant colors, and memorable sound effects. The rise of online gambling has only made them more popular and exciting, thanks to game developers pushing boundaries in bonus features, graphics, and innovation.

However, in 2014, a serious contender to slots emerged: crash games. It started with the Bitcoin community where these types of games quickly became immensely popular. Then they started to reach the mainstream audience around 2019 when the crash game Aviator was released and could be played at several online casino sites.

Today, crash games are reaching a status where they are almost as well-known by gamblers as slot machines. But one question remains. Which type of game is the better one to play? In this article, we will answer this by comparing the two and elaborating on the comparisons.

Even though crash games come in a decent variety, slot machines prevail in this aspect. Most crash games are simple and feature an object in motion that picks up speed or ascends higher and higher. Alongside, a win multiplier soars.

Now, certain crash games come with unusual and interesting designs such as Need for X, Goblin Run, October Pub, and Save the Princess. A category sometimes called ‘Mine Games,’ where you select items while avoiding the bad boy is, also a form of crash game.

However, compared to several thousands of slot machines created by hundreds of different game providers, crash games are only a few hundred created by a few providers.

Their relatively new entry into the market is a reason, but this is likely to change in the future. Nonetheless, it is currently a fact that slot games outnumber crash games by a huge margin.

The former has had decades to evolve. Today, slot games come in all imaginable forms with hundreds of themes, bonus features, a wide array of eye-catching animations, and various win mechanics. While slot providers copy each other, resulting in many games being identical, there is also a ton of unique ones.

Slots have the standard winning concept of paylines ranging from 10 – 100 or more. There are also MegaWays slots where the reels are everchanging and matching symbols only need to appear on adjacent ones. Then we have Cluster Pay slots where you play on a grid and symbols must appear in a cluster, either connected horizontally or vertically.

We even have unique game designs, including Finn and the Twirly Spin where symbols move in a maze-like shape, Planet of the Apes which is essentially two slots in one, Wildcano where the reels are circular, and Star Guardians, the first-person shooter-style slot game.

Don’t even get us started on all the different free spin features, mechanics, interactive bonus games, and features as awesome as bonus buy that exist. There is just a lot!

Maximum Win

If you’re all about scooping the biggest prizes, crash games have a slight edge over slot machines. Currently, the most you can win in slots as a multiplier to your stake is 200,000x.

This can be done in Starburst XXXtreme by NetEnt and Super Boost by Electric Elephant. While 200,000x is a massive amount, it’s overshadowed by the 1,000,000x you can win in certain crash games, such as Aviator and Aero.

Now, all these examples are extremes and not what you would find in the average slot or crash game. On average, the maximum win tends to be similar for both slot machines and crash games, often being in the ballpark of 1,000x – 20,000x.

Progressive Jackpots

Both crash games and slot machines may have progressive jackpots in them, but for the biggest ones, slot machines are currently the way to go. Iconic jackpot slots such Mega Moolah and Mega Fortune regularly pay out single winnings in the ballpark of ₹50 crore and the record win sits at a whopping ₹180 crore.

On the other hand, crash games currently have quite low jackpots. For instance, we have Rocketman where the biggest jackpot rarely reaches ₹1 lakh. We also have Cricket Crash where the jackpot tends to be bigger – up to ₹10 lakh or more – but where it is shared between all current players when released. Thus, the single prize may not be very large.

Regarding RTP, there is no clear winner as it tends to be quite similar between the two types of games, normally ranging from 95% – 97%.

Both game types have even extra lucrative versions where the RTP goes up to 99% or more. For instance, the total RTP in the Rocketman crash game is 99.5%, and that in the Book of 99 slot is 99%.

Nonetheless, the RTP in crash games is often based on players instantly cashing out at the lowest possible multiplier. This information is often stated in the games while that about the RTP is when cashing out a higher one tends to be missing.

This might suggest that the RTP could be lower if you don’t instantly cash out and, in such case, slot machines might have the edge as the RTP in them is fixed.

If sharing the gambling experience with other players is your cup of tea, you want to go for crash games and avoid playing slot machines online. The latter are strictly single-player games.

The only exceptions are certain live dealer games where a game host spins a slot in real-time. You participate in them over a video stream with other players with whom you can chat. These games, however, are few and far between.

On the other hand, most crash games are multiplayer games letting dozens or even hundreds of players share the experience. Many of them have integrated chat and live statistics that show players cashing out and securing winnings in real-time. There are single-player crash games, too, but overall, this game type is way more sociable than slots.

Provably Fair

Provably fair is a concept that allows players to verify the randomness of any game round. It’s a fully transparent system that guarantees the online casino isn’t pulling any tricks and being unfair.

Currently, such a system is only being used in crash games and not in slot machines. Now, not every crash game is provably fair, but most are. This is part of the reason these games have become such a hit. Players love the sense of security and transparency they get.

This is not to say that slot games aren’t fair. While they don’t provide players with the same level of transparency, every slot from a legitimately licensed online casino is independently tested for fairness and randomness by companies such as BMM Testlabs or Gaming Labs International.

Sense of Control

Both slot machines and crash games offer players a certain sense of control. However, it is undoubtedly greater with the latter. While slot machines allow you to stop the reels at any given moment, it doesn’t affect the results of the game round. The results are already been determined when you press the spin button. Everything else is just for show.

In crash games, on the other hand, you always win when you ‘stop the game’ by cashing out, as this is the entire point of crash gambling. You decide for yourself when you want to cash out. This gives you a higher sense of control because ultimately, you lose as you don't cash out in time. Whether you win less or more depends on how long you wait before you cash out.

If you like viewing the biggest wins in a game on a daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly basis, many crash games allow you to do just this. They display a top list showing the amount won and the multiplier at which the player cashed out.

A leaderboard like this is completely absent in slot machines. Now, certain online casino sites keep records of the biggest winnings and publish them. However, this is unusual and has nothing to do with the slots. Instead, it is a feature implemented by the casino site.

In-Game Promotions

Coming to promotional offers, the experience is similar in crash games and slot machines. Both types of games have tournaments and giveaways going for them, which are not supplied by the online casino but by the actual developer of the game.

As an example, Pragmatic Play, a well-known supplier of different types of casino games regularly runs two types of promotions in their slot machines:

  • Tournaments where players compete on a leaderboard for prizes that can reach up to ₹20 lakh
  • Cash Drops where extra money is randomly rewarded by just spinning on a slot

Crash games have the same types of tournaments and a similar way of randomly rewarding players. For instance, the crash game Rocketman lets you randomly win up to 10 free bets, each worth the amount you stake.

A type of promotional feature unique to crash games and specifically found in Aviator is the possibility for players themselves to give away free bets. Here, players can donate free bets in the chat that will be up for grabs on a first-claim basis.
