The Game in Short

Who-Wants-to-Be-a-Millionaire-Video-Poker-Live

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Video Poker Live is similar to Video Poker Live released by Evolution Gaming in August 2023. However, it comes with the addition of a Millionaire Bonus Game that can be triggered if the correct cards are dealt.

The basics of the game are to get the best five poker hand. The better the hand, the higher the payouts. In every game round, you are dealt five random cards from a deck of 52. You then get the option to replace any of these cards once.

The game will automatically highlight the cards that are best to keep. Once the decision is made, you receive a payout based on the hand you made, if you made a qualifying one.

There are five different Video Poker variations that you can choose to play in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Video Poker Live, each having its own pay table and minimum hand to qualify for a payout. We will cover each individual pay table shortly, but among the traditional hands you can get paid for, you will find:

HandDescription
High CardA pair and a three-of-a-kind
PairTwo cards of the same rank
Two PairTwo different pairs of cards
Three of a kindThree cards of the same rank
StraightFive consecutive cards of any suit
FlushFive cards of the same suit, not in sequence
Full HouseA pair and a three of a kind
Four of a kindFour cards of the same rank
Straight FlushFive consecutive cards of the same suit
Royal FlushAce, King, Queen, Jack, 10 of the same suit

The five Video Poker variations that you can play in the game include:

  • Jacks or Better
  • Deuces Wild
  • Bonus Poker
  • Double Double Bonus
  • Millionaire Aces

Apart from each of these variations having a different pay table, the Deuces Wild variation is unique in the sense that the 2 of spades, 2 of hearts, 2 of diamonds, and 2 of clubs are wild cards. This means that they can represent any type of card in the deck, making them very valuable.

Millionaire Bonus Game

The Millionaire Bonus Game is the interesting twist and big highlight of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Video Poker Live. To qualify for this bonus, a bet must be placed on the bonus position, which comes at an additional cost of 5 times the amount you bet on your Video Poker hand.

To trigger the bonus game, the highest 4 cards in each game round must make any of the five following combinations:

  • Ace – King – Queen – Jack
  • Ace – King – Queen – Queen
  • Ace – King – Jack – Jack
  • Ace – Ace – Ace – Queen
  • Ace – Ace – King – 9

Once triggered, a grid with up to 10 levels and 4 selections per level is presented. For each level, you get to select A, B, C, or D which will either reward you with a cash prize or reveal an X. While the X will end the bonus game, you get to continue up the levels for as long as you pick a cash prize. With each level, the cash prizes become greater.

The bonus game also includes up to three lifelines that can be used:

  • 50:50: the two smallest cash prize values are removed
  • Ask the Audience: the highest cash prize value is selected.
  • Ask the Host: some of the lower cash prizes are removed.

The potential payouts in each bonus game and the number of lifelines available varies depending on what combination of cards triggered the bonus.

Payouts

The maximum payout in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Video Poker Live is 2,000 times the amount you bet, which can be won from the Millionaire Bonus Game. The second highest is 1,500x from the Millionaire Aces Video Poker variant.

Below is a breakdown of the payouts in each video poker game, as well as the payouts for the Millionaire Bonus Game.

As previously mentioned, the potential payouts in the Millionaire Bonus Game depend on which card combination triggered the bonus. The Ace – Ace – King – 9 combination is the hardest to get and consequently, it can pay the most.

Compared to other live dealer games, the potential payouts in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Video Poker Live are pretty decent. While there are plenty of games that can pay a lot more, there are also games that have much lower winning potential.

RTP

The RTP in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Video Poker live ranges from 96% – 99.54%. Each Video Poker variant, as well as the bonus game, has its own RTP as follows:

Variant / BonusRTP
Jacks or Better99.54%
Millionaire Aces99.25%
Bonus Poker99.17%
Double Double Bonus98.98%
Deuces Wild98.92%
Millionaire Bonus Game96.00%

Video Poker in general is renowned for having very high payout percentages and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Video Poker Live is no exception to the rule. Topping the list is Jacks or Better with a stunning 99.54% which is just about as high of an RTP you will find in any game. In contrast, the vast majority of casino games have an RTP of 95% – 97%.

It is, however, a little bit disappointing to see the Millionaire Bonus Game having an RTP of 96%. While this isn’t low in general, it is much lower than the RTP of the Video Poker variants, which means that if you include the Millionaire Bonus Game bet when playing, you are actually lowering your chances of winning. This is quite a letdown as this bonus is the highlight of the game.

Fun Factor

While I didn’t like Evolution Gaming’s Video Poker Live, I think Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Video Poker Live is a decent game, much thanks to the addition of the Millionaire Bonus Game. However, it also looks a lot better as this game uses real cards as opposed to virtual ones which creates a more immersive and real experience.

To me, the main downside of the game is that game rounds are very slow compared to the virtual Video Pokers that you can play at most online gambling sites. In these, a game round doesn’t take more than a couple of seconds, while you have to wait 80 seconds in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Video Poker Live. Thus, the game plays best when playing multiple games at a time or while watching a stream.

As for the Millionaire Bonus Game, I really love this addition as it adds another layer of excitement to each game round. You are not only hoping to get the cards that will make you a high-paying hand but also cards that will trigger the bonus. The bonus in itself is also well-designed. It looks nice and is played together with the game’s host. It does, however, take quite a bit of time to complete – for good or bad.

Strategies

Like any Video Poker game, it is possible to apply a perfect playing strategy in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Video Poker Live. Every decision made in Video Poker will affect the RTP you play with. For instance, if you’re dealt a pair and three cards to a flush, discarding the pair to go for the flush would lower your RTP as opposed to keeping the pair and replacing the other cards.

While perfect playing strategies can be found online, you don’t need them in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Video Poker Live as the game will tell you how you should play to maximize your winnings. On every game round, the cards that are best to keep will be highlighted for you.

In addition to the above, there is a strategic element to which Video Poker variant you choose to play and if you bet on the bonus game or not. The Jacks or Better variant has the best RTP so this is the best one to play for the highest chance of profiting.

Millionaire Aces is also a version to consider. Not only is the RTP the second highest, but this variant pays much more for a Royal Flush than the other ones; 1,500x compared to 800x and 1,000x. This, however, is at the cost of a high card or pair not paying anything at all. Thus, you will win much less frequently in this game as you need to get at least two pairs.

For purely strategic reasons where you’re looking to maximize your long-term chances of winning, it is always best to not play the Millionaire Bonus Game bet as this will bring down your overall RTP. However, this bet does add a lot of excitement to the game so personally, I would always include it.
